LOCATION: The airport is located 24km southeast of central Manhattan
TERMINALS: There are nine terminals. Here is a map.
Most South Africa Fares passengers
will be using JFK for connections to South African Airways flights. SAA usually uses
terminal 3.
SHUTTLE TO LA GUARDIA AIRPORT Many Canada and US domestic flights
fly into La Guardia. Time should be allowed for a connection by bus Time should be allowed
for the airport transfer. The New York Airport Service Bus leaves JFK every 30 minutes -
6am to 10pm. The trip takes approximately 45 minutes (unless there are traffic problems)
and costs US$11 per person. The cost of the shuttle may however be included if a through
ticket has been purchased and a separate shuttle van may be provided. Check with the South
Africa Fares Travel Centre at the time of booking. Taxis to La Guardia cost
between US$19 and US$22 and take approximately 30 minutes.
TAKE A BREAK Facilities for tired travellers are limited and there are no showers.
A QUICK LOOK AT NEW YORK; Take a taxi downtown and pick up a tour to the
Statue of Liberty or Ellis Island. Gray Line offers excellent downtown tours that last 3
hours. The cost is US$35 for adults and US$25 for children The tour runs frequently
through the day
TRANSFER BETWEEN TERMINALS: Free and physically-accessible buses are
available for travel between terminals and car parks. During peak afternoon hours, a round
trip between terminals can take up to 30 minutes, so travellers must allow sufficient time
before departure.
INFORMATION AND HELP DESKS: Traveler's Aid services (tel: 718 656 4870) are located
in Terminal 6, with counters also in Terminals 3, 7 and 8. JFK Automated Airport
Information System (tel: 718 244 4444) provides passengers with recorded information on
all airport facilities, including parking, lost and found, driving directions and ground
transportation; passengers can also talk to an operator for further information.
AIRPORT FACILITIES: Money and communications: Services include banks, bureaux de
change, ATMs and postal services. Eating and drinking: There are bars and
restaurants located throughout the airport. Shopping: Shops, including duty free,
are located throughout the terminals. Other facilities: Other facilities include a
hotel reservation service. Each terminal offers a comprehensive range of facilities.
However, there is an inter-terminal bus service for passengers who require facilities
located at a different terminal.
DISABLED FACILITIES: The airport is wheelchair-accessible and is well-equipped to
accommodate disabled passengers. Reserved reduced-rate parking is available in car parks
close to the terminals; passengers should contact Five Star Parking for further
information (tel: 718 244 4168). Disabled toilets can be found in each terminal and TDD
telephones are clearly-signposted throughout the terminals. Hand-operated cars can be
hired from Avis or Hertz car hire companies.
CONFERENCE AND BUSINESS FACILITIES: Terminals offer fax, computer, photocopying and
courier services. These services are available to all passengers, except at Terminals 5
and 6 where they are for members only. Conference facilities for airline members are
offered at Terminal 7, as well as in airline lounges; telephone contact numbers for
conference facility providers can be obtained through individual airlines. Data ports are
located throughout most terminals.
CAR HIRE: All major hire companies, including Avis, Budget, Hertz and
National are represented. There are car hire desks (or courtesy telephones) in each
terminal, on the Arrivals level. Courtesy transport is available to take passengers to car
hire offices to pick up their hire car; car hire offices are located along the Van Wyck
Expressway.
CAR PARKING: The airport provides daily and long-term parking facilities. The long-term
car park is located 6.4km (4 miles) from the terminals. Free buses stop in front of the
terminals every 10-15 minutes, providing transportation to the long-term car park and the
Howard Beach subway station. The Green, Blue, Orange and Red daily car parks are located
next to the terminals. There is additional daily parking on the roof of Terminal 3. For

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: JFK is located on Van Wyck Expressway (678), which can be accessed
from Belt Parkway (27), Grand Central Parkway and Queens Boulevard. To reach the airport
from Manhattan, take the Van Wyck Expressway to the airport exit, then take the Belt
Parkway East to exit 19/Van Wyck Expressway (678). From Eastern Long Island, take the Belt
Parkway West to exit 20/JFK Expressway. From New Jersey, take NJ Turnpike to exit 14C
(Holland Tunnel), then head south on West Street to Belt Parkway. From upstate New York,
take 87 and head south to 278, then take 278 and head east to 495 and finally, take 495 to
the east to Van Wyck Expressway (678). From Connecticut, take 95 and head south to 678,
then take 678 south which becomes Van Wyck Expressway.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Road: Taxi: Travellers are advised to use official NYC taxis in
order to ensure safe transportation; lost property enquiries or complaints can be made by
contacting NYC taxis. Limousine: Private limousines to all destinations are available for
hire; courtesy telephones are located next to ground transportation information on the
baggage reclaim level. Companies include Classic Limousine (tel: 631 567 5100) and Tel
Aviv Car and Limousine Service (tel: 212 777 7777). Bus: A free airport shuttle bus
(labelled 'long term parking lot' and operating 24 hours a day at 15-minute intervals)
goes to Howard Beach Station; from there, passengers can make a subway connection on the
'A' train which runs every 10-15 minutes to central Manhattan and stops at a number of
stations. New York Airport Express Bus Service operates a direct service to the
Port Authority Bus Terminal (Manhattan West Side) and Grand Central Station (Manhattan
East Side); buses operate every 15-30 minutes, 0600-2400, and every 30 minutes at other
times. A rail link connecting the airport to New York's subway system is scheduled to open
in the autumn of 2003. The Super Shuttle Manhattan runs 24 hours a day and is a
